Find Out Which Type of Hurricane Shutters Should You Choose?

How to Protect Your Property from Extreme and Unpredictable Weather

Introduction
When deciding which will be the best hurricane shutters to choose there are several factors you may wish to consider. These will include which door and window shutters will best suit the style of your building as well as which will ensure the best protection from sudden, unpredictable and continually shifting weather patterns. For the safest protection you will definitely need to consider external shutters which give added protection to the glass in your windows and doors.

Bahama shutters

A Bahama style shutter is usually a single louvered panel hinged, on the outside of the building above a window. Subsequently, they usually only open to a maximum of being at a right-angle to the building and when open will require propping and locking in place. This is ideal in very sunny regions where you want to maximize the shade over widows, without actually closing the shutters. However, in less sunny regions this could result in quite dark rooms. When closed they can again be bolted or locked for security. Louvered Bahama shutters are cost effective to install and offer a reasonable level of adequate protection from stormy weather.

Accordion shutters

These can be solid or louvered panels that fold, like an accordion, to open or close. Accordion shutters can be an ideal option for wide windows near the corner of a building. By being able to be folded when open, when they are then secured against the wall they take up less space. However, in doing so they will protrude out from the wall more than the ordinary Colonial shutters. Being made from hinged panels they can be weaker than other type of shutters; also some designs open and close by being guided along a track - a potential extra source of maintenance. Hurricane glass is also an important point to consider. It is a high performance glass and is recommended for use with any louvered or plantation shutters – essential of course if you have the interior shutters.

Rolling shutters

Also known as roller shutters, roll up shutters or roll down shutters; they are invariably made from narrow panels of steel, linked together like a ‘caterpillar track’; and sit in a frame surrounding the window, or even door, that they are to protect. Most modern rolling shutters will be installed to be operated both mechanically and electrically, meaning that they can all be opened or shut very quickly by operating just one master switch. Although this is the most expensive option, they are also the most robust and fastest to operate. They have the additional advantage of providing high degree of extra security from outside intruders. If building insurance is already high, the introduction of these style shutters may well be a reason for reduction in insurance costs.

Storm Panel Shutters and Hurricanes

The least expensive option in shutters capable of withstanding a hurricane is storm panels. Plywood storm panels, or aluminum ones, may well be quite adequate, but steel hurricane shutter panels are to be recommended. They have permanent fixing points which can be a track and/or bolt system. The panels are not permanently in place and require storing when not in use, which means to get them in place you’ll need to have plenty of warning of approaching storms or hurricanes. Steel panel shutters, being heavy, can be difficult to install or put in place especially on large windows, without help from someone else.
