Stylish Plantation Shutters Enhancing and Protecting Your Home

The Anatomy of Traditional Interior Shutters

Traditional shutters, also known as “colonial” shutters, usually have a thickness of ¾” with louvers of 1¼” in width.  A few of these interior shutters have flat slats.  However, generally they are shaped like a wedge, with a ridge called a vain running down the middle.  These small slats are usually spaced one inch apart.  Window shutters such as these can be tailored to the dimensions of your window.  In general, the most common traditional window shutters are the four-panel models.  These have two panels on each side of the window.

The home of the colonial style shutters is the northeastern portion of the US.  These shutters are common in New England and down the eastern seaboard into Maryland and Virginia.  This particular style of shutter is found in homes dating back from before the Revolutionary War, and is still common in homes built in the Early American tradition.  Over time, the colonial shutters also caught on in homes with a country style.  Many companies have manufactured traditional window shutters, but there was a shift in the past twenty or thirty years to the wider-slat plantation shutters.  However, the demand for the colonial (or traditional) style is once again growing stronger, showing that they are a true classic.

Versatile and Timeless
Colonial shutters provide a quick, easy way to give your room a new look.  They contribute instant warmth and charm to any space and work well not only in colonial or country style homes, but also lend themselves to a more contemporary look as well.  Choose from wood such as pine, oak, maple, or cedar.  Leave the beautiful grain exposed for a natural look, or paint the shutters to coordinate with your décor.  For ultimate decorating options, choose a shutter without slats.  This allows you to add bamboo or fabric in the center.  Choose any of these variations on the traditional style for a timeless look that will perfectly enhance your home’s décor.

Of course you may still prefer other types of plantation shutters and particularly the innovative polycore shutters.  Remember also the importance of hurricane shutters in today's forever changing weather patterns.
