Louver widths vary from one shutter style to the next. Slats are typically manufactured in widths of 2 ½, 3 ½, and 4 ½ inches.  The size difference is the key to the “look” of the shutter.  This also allows for varying degrees of light permitted in your space, as well as either more or less privacy.  Also consider your view to the outside world: the smaller the slat width, such as with a traditional interior shutters’ smaller slats, the more your view will be obstructed.  Your best bet when choosing the width of louvers is to consider the overall dimensions (including depth) of the window, as well as your home’s décor.
